I have been trying to come up with the perfect “First Blog Post,” for the past couple of weeks and decided to give up today and just share a few things that have been on my mind and heart.
This new year has been symbolic of change and how constant change truly is. My role has evolved from instructor/teacher to small business owner, we have gone through the process of a re-brand with Braid Creative (which I will share about more later, but you should definitely check them out), and we will be moving locations in just a few weeks. This has already been an exciting few months and I have no doubt the excitement, challenges and changes will continue.
Since embarking on this journey of studio ownership, I have encountered questions from myself and others about what it is that I am trying to accomplish and build. With these questions there have been moments of unquestionable clarity and also moments of overwhelming ambiguity. I think that owning a yoga studio is unique in many ways, because while it is a business and you have to pay bills, it is also a space that is dedicated to helping others grow and it is necessary that yoga be accessible. Taking all of this into consideration, I would like to share some of the vision behind This Land Yoga:
This Land Yoga is a place that you will be welcomed into regardless of your age, size, experience, gender or race. We are a community of diverse individuals that are interested in living more intentionally.
Teachers at This Land Yoga will take care of you. Although it may not be the best idea to take a level 3 class even if you have never been on a yoga mat before, you will be taken care of regardless of what class you show up to. You will experience consistent classes that are guided by compassionate teachers that are genuinely interested in you.
We, your teachers, are also learning and are on a journey with you. This means that we will evolve, we will change, we will adapt and we are open to your thoughts and opinions. This Land Yoga is a safe place to participate in dialogue regardless of whether or not we are all in agreement with one another.
We will do our best to make yoga accessible for you. If you cannot attend class because of financial reasons, we will do our best to help you out and hope that you will do the same. We are thankful that our community gives to us and supports our vision and we will return this generosity when we can. We will also give to philanthropic organizations in our community as often as possible.
Sometimes classes will be slow, sometimes classes will be faster and sweatier, there will be loud hip hop at times and complete silence at others, sometimes the room will be heated and sometimes it won’t. We will change things up depending on what we think you need, but we will ALWAYS offer intention and will challenge you both physically and mentally.
I am excited to watch This Land Yoga grow and evolve and I am thankful that I am not on this journey alone. There has been so much support extended from a variety of friends, family, clients and strangers that has given me the energy and confidence to build something that is much bigger than myself. I look forward to gathering with friends before, during and after classes and can’t fully comprehend how I get to call this my job. I hope that everyone in this community realizes their value and my gratitude. I look forward to sharing more with you and invite you to participate in this journey of change and growth with me.
Evolve with me,
